Current Project Queue:
I list current in-progress commissions here. I update this every time I finish or start a piece, so be sure to check back if you're not sure how long the wait will be. Generally it takes about a couple days per normal portrait, but sometimes longer depending on what life throws at me at the time.

My Style
- My art focuses primarily on humanoid characters. Normally I do portrait style digital paintings in which the character isn't directly interacting with the environment or other characters, but I will do action scenes as well. My more complex backgrounds use a combination of my own photography and painting, the simple ones are usually a single-color gradient. I can also do character lineups such as for a D&D or Pathfinder party, or any other cast of characters, as well as cover art, so long as you give me the specs to work with/around. I will accept requests for stuff I don't have listed, like icons or text effects, just ask. I probably don't have them listed because I don't have enough examples.
- I will not be offering illuminated manuscript style commissions.
- I reserve the right to refuse a commission if what you're giving me is completely outside my comfort zone, if the Queue is full, or if there are other circumstances preventing me from taking that specific commission. This doesn't usually happen, but, in case it does, you've been warned. Generally the only thing I'll refuse on a consistent basis are mechs, because I just don't do mechanical drawing.
Tools of the Trade
- All of my work is done in Paint Tool SAI and Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 with a Wacom tablet and my own photographs for texture, backgrounds, and reference.
Prices and Examples
All of my prices are based on both the living wage in my area and roughly how long it takes me to complete a picture of the same type and complexity. Since I don't actually have a day job at the moment due to health issues, this is my biggest source of income, besides my books. So, if you can't afford one of these, but still want to support me, all seven of my books are out on Kindle, and Revenant and Scourgemarked are out in paperback. You can find all of those here.
Terminology:
- Partial refers to a waist-up or bust-up drawing. Hands may or may not be included, but feet and legs will not be(unless the character is doing some kind of pose, as demonstrate by Eco down there).
- Full refers to full-body portraits. All of the character will be shown.
- I count characters by head/bust.
Normal Portraits
Single character. Color, shading, and background included. Subtle linework, generally. Effects like fire, magic, or otherwise don't cost any extra.
- PARTIAL: $30
- FULL: $40
Multiple Character Portraits
As normal portrait of choice, but with more characters. Prices are higher because of the complexities with shading, color, light, and pose interaction. This does not apply to Lineups.
- PARTIAL: $40 per character
- FULL: $60 per character

Cover Design
A design for a book cover. The full cover option also works well as a desktop wallpaper! Let me know the dimensions of your book when you request this one. For instance, a half-cover might be 5x8 inches. A full cover is more complex, and I'll also need to know the number of pages, so that I can make the image correct for use when selling a book for print. (If you're not selling for print just give me the dimensions you'd like and I'll work with that.) Alternatively, you can use the Amazon CreateSpace thing here, which will design a template for you. I don't know if this actually requires a CreateSpace account or not, but there it is. Text may or may not be included on the image, your pick. I can also send a .psd file with the text on a separate layer or folder.
- Half Covers: $75
- Full Covers: $100
Request Procedure and Payment
- Send me a note with the basic idea and references, if you have them. I like having detailed descriptions of characters so that I can make them as true to your vision as possible, but even general things like, "he looks like Ezio, but with a bigger beard and modern clothes" will work. I will usually take creative liberty with posing, lighting, and expression if I feel like it fits the piece better. If you're not from dA, you can can also message me on Facebook or send an email to lizjlowell@gmail.com. I reserve the right to decline a request at this point.
- We discuss price. I've tried to make the pricing system as obvious as possible, but I'll still tell you what it'll be, and you can ask any questions you want. I will give you the email I use for Paypal once we've squared everything away, although I am open to discussing alternate payment methods(especially if you know me IRL) as well as bit of haggling.
- I will work on the initial sketch, while you work on the payment. I'll show the sketch to you and you can ask for changes at this stage.
- Once the payment is received I will finish the piece and send it to you. You'll receive a hi-res pic without watermark. File formats available are .psd, .png, .pdf, and .jpeg, and you can request any size you want. The default width for a landscape piece will be 1920 pixels, and for a portrait piece will be 1440 pixels.
- Please allow up to a month for completion, especially if you've asked for something complex, with extra characters, or both. It doesn't usually take me that long, but life sometimes happens. I will keep you updated every week if it's taking a while. My normal time is about a week, if things are rough.
What you can and cannot do with your commission
- The finished piece can be submitted to your own gallery, but the credit is still mine, so please link back to me.
- You can modify the piece and use it for personal purposes, like banners for websites/blogs, journal CSS's etc.
- I usually submit the finished pieces to my gallery, but you can tell me not to in advance.
Any other questions? Send me a note or comment on this journal!

On the Battle for the Net
I want to do something to help #battleforthenet but I have no pictures. I have no will to draw because the idea that someone would want to stifle our ability to connect with each other, learn from each other, and share with each other, is ludicrous. It makes me feel more than a bit hopeless. The internet is how so many people make a living nowadays. I can only imagine the outright chaos that would ensue if that was taken away. My sincere hope is that the people making this decision have at least enough brains - if not enough hearts - to realize that blocking us from having a space to live and breathe in this world that takes us and breaks us,
Open for Business!
Hello, everyone!
Being the Hermit is finally open for business! This is where my art commissions have moved to, as well as a little surprise for those of you who didn't know that I have a serious love for divination.
Hope to see you over there, either for business or just for a look around. It's gonna be a great time! We'll have a party. :happybounce:
Also, I've got a discount code going until July 6th: "HELLOWORLD". More details over on the shop page.
I've Been Busy Again
Hello, wonderful people!
Where on earth did you all come from?! I had a view spike of nearly 1,000 on my profile a few days ago and I'm wondering... the heeeeck?! BUT THANK YOU. That's a LOT for me. You make me smile.
Anyway, I've been busy again. Got a day job, finally, back in... March?? Ish? Time flies when you're perpetually exhausted. Said new job involves waking up at stupid-o'clock in the morning and dragging my tail in to lift and carry heavy boxes around a store. I love it so much. I now have +1 biceps. Things are great. Exhausting, but great.
BUT While that's been keeping me busy, I finally finished writing Winterdream - for thos
The Music of the Tales
I have been busy, ladies and gentlepeople. Today I finished the open/end music scores for both Scourgemarked and Lightbringer. So, here are all three pieces, for your listening pleasure. I highly recommend "The Battle of Hazel Hill." It is all manner of epic.
Revenant‘s theme: OrthamearScourgemarked‘s theme: Gates of LisernaLightbringer‘s theme: The Battle of Hazel Hill
The next challenge will be actually getting the three beasts into Audiobook form. Then you all will get to hear the story strait from the bard's mouth. Through my, admittedly craptastic, voice. XD Look forward to many things this year.
Also... another tril
